If you have pets (cats or dogs) at home, what are the precautions for choosing blinds?

Are you wondering whether there are any cat proof blinds or dog proof blinds out there? If so, this article is for you. In it, we explore the best blind options for pets and pet rooms.

If you have pets or a pet room at home, what factors should you consider when choosing blinds?

We love our pets, but they can be naughty, particularly when it comes to your new blinds. Therefore, in this section, we take a look at some of the factors that you should consider.

Please note that no pet blinds can ever fully protect against scratches. However, there are measures you can take now to protect your investment long-term.

▍Material: how to choose the material of blinds

Blind material needs to be top-of-mind for pet owners. Choosing the right option can make cleaning easier and keep your blinds looking their best, even if you have pets in the house.

Our zebra blinds are made of 100 percent polyester. While this material will not keep 100 percent of pet hairs out, they are considerably more resistant than conventional materials, such as cotton. Moreover, some of our conventional roller blinds are made of PVC-coated polyester fiber. This material prevents both dust and pet dander from accumulating easily. .

MSBT offers several roller blinds and blackout roller blinds that meet these requirements.

▍Safety: Choose cordless blinds to avoid pet accidents

Blinds are also potentially hazardous to pets. Loose mechanisms and drawstrings may lead to injury.

Therefore, MSBT offers three types of cordless blinds to prevent pet accidents. These include:

① Hydraulic spring back roller blinds

Hydraulic spring back roller blinds work similarly to projector screens. Energy contained in a mechanical spring moves the blind up and down, while a hydraulic reducer prevents them from snapping up and down violently for quieter operation.

② Drawstring holder & bead chain holder

All MSBT blinds products come with a holder for the drawstring or bead chain. Owners can use this to fix the drawstring/bead chain on the wall to avoid shaking and keep it out of the way of pets.

③ Electric blinds

Our electric blinds use the power of a motor to raise blinds up and down, leading to better safety and convenience. The motor is contained within the blind header or inside the tube so there’s no need to leave room for a cord or drawstring. You operate the unit with a remote control instead.

④ Easy to clean

Eventually, pets will make your blinds dirty easily. Therefore, it is best to buy products that are easy to clean.

You can clean most hard blinds easily – including zebra, roller, venetian blinds or honeycomb shades – with a dry cloth, dust collector or vacuum fitted with the brush head attachment. Don’t wash blinds’ hard surfaces with water directly. It’s not necessary.

In the event of serious soiling, wipe blinds clean with a damp cloth. It should remove more dirt than through dry methods alone.

If that doesn’t work, grab a washing up bowl and fill it with water and a small amount of detergent. Then soak the cleaning cloth in the mixture, wring it out, and then use it to wipe down your blinds.

Be careful with how much detergent you add, though. While solutions are highly effective at removing stains, they can cause the blinds’ surface to fade.

Since detergents have different strengths, you’ll need to take a cautious approach. Dilute a small amount of detergent in a bowl according to the strength of the cleaner, and then apply it to an inconspicuous area of your blind. Leave for a couple of days and then return to the spot to see if there is any color fading. If the color stays, you’re free to clean the rest of the blind.

⑤ Aesthetics/patterns

Lastly, you might want to consider blinds with aesthetics that complement your pet room. With MSBT, you can print your own pet photos on the blinds. Just upload your images on our website and we’ll check details and begin fabrication if file requirements are met.

When arranging a pet room, what types of blinds are recommended first, and what are the key points to pay attention to?

You’ll need to think carefully about the type of blinds you install in your pet room. In this section, we run through some popular options and their suitability.

✔️ Zebra blinds

Zebra blinds comprise a piece of material with juxtaposed light and dark sections for controlling the amount of light entering your rooms. When the opaque sections line up back and front, then the blind is open: when they don’t, it’s closed.

If your pet is highly excitable when looking out of the window, you’ll want to make sure that they can’t see what’s going on outside the window through the  opaque sections of the blind. You’ll also want to invest in a zebra blind made of a polyester-based fabric which prevents both dust and pet dander from accumulating easily.

✔️ Roller Blinds

Roller blinds’ active component is a piece of fabric that unfurls from a unit at the top of your window. For pets, the biggest risk from these blinds is the pull-cord. To reduce this risk, you can invest in a roller blind set with a safety hook , choose a hydraulic spring system, or get a motorized roller blinds instead.

✔️ Venetian blinds

Venetian blinds are blinds that comprise a series of horizontal slats that users can rotate to allow more or less light into a room.

If you are a pet owner, the preferred order of Venetian blinds are as follows: imitation wood series venetian blinds and aluminum venetian blinds (our top recommendation), then wooden Venetian blinds. We would, in general, caution against the use of fabric blinds for pets because they can tear it.

Even so, if your pet is in the room, they may attempt to paw the blinds, or even crawl through them. Either keep your venetian blinds  in the closed position, or  lift up slats can reduce the possibility of damaging venetian blinds.

✔️ Honeycomb shades

Honeycomb shades won’t be your first choice when it comes to decorating the pet rooms. Because of their curved shape, they are relatively fragile, and are often made of material that attracts pet dander. However, if your pet can’t stand the heat, honeycomb blinds will be perfect due to its heat insulation effect. Just make sure to lift up the shades to where your pets cannot touch.

Recommended blinds Types for Cats or Dogs and Important Precautions

The type of precautions you take with your blinds depends on whether you have a cat or a dog.

Cats🐈

Cats love playing with dangling cords. It’s one of the reasons they are so obsessed with cotton reels.

As such, blinds with dangling cords hanging from them are extremely tempting for cats. Given half a chance, they will try to grab them.

When choosing cat blinds, look for the following features:

  • Cordless or motorized design
  • Linen-free composition, since linen will not stand a chance against your cat’s claw.
  • Corded versions with safety hooks that you can safely fix drawstring or ball chain on the wall.
  • Easy to clean. Ideally, you should be able to clean blinds with a wet cloth and a tiny bit of dish soap. Window coverings should also not stain easily when they come into contact with cats.

Dog🐕

Dogs can also damage blinds. However, the approach you take needs to be slightly different from cats. The main reason dogs damage blinds is because they see something interesting outside, get excited, and want to join in.

To protect your blinds from dogs, choose models that offer:

  • Cordless design to protect against chewing or getting tangled up (which can bring the entire blind assembly off the wall and put your dog’s wellbeing at risk)
  • Complete window coverage so that your dog can’t see what’s going on outside and thus get excited

Use smart blinds control to better control the impact of the scenery outside the window on pets

Smart blinds are a helpful option for homeowners because they can be easily controlled from anywhere at any time.

As every pet’s personality is different, you probably need to adjust blinds frequently for different pets. For some, keeping blinds shut is the best policy because it prevents dogs and cats from being distracted by events unfolding outside the window. For others, being open is the best option. When blinds and curtains are fully raised, it prevents pets from destroying the fabric. As your pet’s owner, you’ll need to experiment to see which option works best.

You can stop pets from chewing on remote control and, in rare cases, swallowing them by using app control. MotionBlinds app allows you to control your blinds from your phone . This solution works for both Android and Apple iOS users.

HomeKit electric blinds are another option. This is Apple’s proprietary smart home platform that allows you to control multiple accessories around your house at once, including electric blinds. It is only available to Apple product owners.
