What is Japandi, or the Nordic wabi-sabi style?

The term "Japandi" is a combination of the words "Japanese" and "Scandinavian." As an emerging interior design style, Japandi, or Scandinavian wabi-sabi, is widely popular because it embodies both the minimalist spirit of Japanese style and the fresh atmosphere of Scandinavia.

The Japanese style showcased in Japandi particularly refers to the "wabi-sabi" aesthetic in traditional Japanese culture; it is a spirit of appreciating and cherishing simplicity, nature, and imperfection. The renowned Japanese aesthetician Yoshinori Ohnishi defines wabi-sabi as follows:

  • 侘 (wabi) means simple and unrefined, yet finding abundance in imperfection.
  • The word 寂 (sabi) means desolate or lonely; it describes the state of mind one experiences when faced with things that have faded or disappeared.

This aesthetic concept has profoundly influenced Japanese culture and art, and has become a source of inspiration for modern interior design, ultimately forming a style that is gentler and more healing than wabi-sabi, and has more Zen-like philosophy than Scandinavian style.

Both Japanese and Scandinavian styles deeply appreciate the value of natural light and ventilation, gently reminding residents of the eternal, interdependent relationship between themselves and their surroundings.

Therefore, in this ever-changing era, Japandi's Nordic wabi-sabi style stands out, providing a space for reflection and tranquility even in the most congested and noisy cities.

▌What are the key design elements of the Nordic wabi-sabi style in Japandi?

Japanese-style Nordic wabi-sabi often retains a lot of natural elements, such as emphasizing indoor lighting and ventilation, and choosing furniture with natural textures, bringing a calm and healing power to the home.

Its minimalist design, blending Eastern and Western elements, often uses gentle, neutral color schemes and understated, simple furnishings to create a rustic yet comfortable atmosphere.

1. Simple and clean lines

Minimize unnecessary lines and soft furnishings. Whether it's ceiling woodwork, cabinetry, or home decor, Japandi's Nordic wabi-sabi style emphasizes simple, flowing lines, outlining the space in a minimalist yet delicate way.

2. Neutral earth tones

To create a calm and harmonious atmosphere, Japandi's Nordic wabi-sabi style combines the light color preference of Nordic style with the cool black tones of Japanese style, often using warm neutral colors such as beige and gray as the base of the space.

3. Furniture made of natural materials

Japandi's furniture, inspired by the Nordic wabi-sabi style, uses materials sourced from nature, such as stone, rattan, linen, and wood, to promote and practice sustainable concepts.

At the same time, a small amount of metal and glass elements commonly found in Nordic style will be added, especially small items such as lamps and tables, to enhance the sense of space.

4. Decorative handicrafts

Handicrafts play an important role in both Nordic and Japanese styles. In addition to showcasing the exquisite skills of different craftspeople, handicrafts also convey the life attitudes and philosophies that craftspeople entrust to their works.

The Japanese style, which blends Eastern and Western elements, also pays great attention to incorporating craftsmanship details such as weaving, ceramics, and fabrics into the home, giving the space a unique style.
